Dan Fogelberg Dies

Ok kids, I know you probably don't know or care who Dan Fogelberg is. Why should you anyway? He was unlikely to ever play at the earl. Rick Rubin wasn't gonna rescue his career at some point with a ground breaking comeback record. He would have never joined the cast of a lame celebreality series on vh1. Dan Fogelberg was a singer/songwriter who helped define that "Soft Rock" from the late seventies that came from the FM radio lodged in your mom's '79 ford station wagon.
I remember two hits he had. "Same Old Lang Syne" and "Leader of the Band". He had a soft, sensitive, nostalgic flair with his lyrics and a gentle touch with production.
But yes, why should you care?
Well, Fogelberg died of Prostate Cancer at the age of 53. Folks, that is young. When a disease that can be beaten by early detection takes the life of a musician, I always get a little worried for all my own musician friends with no health insurance, or worse - the kind with a deductable so high, a preventative colonoscopy or other such routine examination would cost more than the car many of them can't even afford. Almost losing a close friend to a similar Cancer this past year, and realizing that I can't afford my own colonoscopy - I have to stop and think just for a second how quickly things like this can change your life forever, and how fleeting that period of time is in life where you really believe you're invincible and that things like this can never happen to you your drummer or bass player. Kids, take care of yourself - appreciate one another - consider a day job at turner.
This December 24th, take a listen to "Same Old Lang Syne" and while you experience the romantic, kinda sad tale of running into your old girlfriend at the grocery store on a lonely, snowy christmas eve - remember how short, fragmented and chaotic life really is and say a little prayer for your insides, which could already be lousy with cancer for all you know since your life choices and passion have led you away from the 6 or 8 jobs you can get in America that make it possible to keep yourself healthy.
And if you have one of those jobs - resolve this new years to take advantage of that luxury, for it is a rare thing.
Rest in Peace Dan Fogelberg. There but for the grace of dog go I.
