::::~~~~::::~~~~

the arc of a line can be reproduced digitally, only with a
different skeleton.
it depends on what you are after.
waves v. numbers: analog v. digital.
waves have pretty mothers, but heavy luggage.
numbers are interesting, but never laugh (unless told to).
neither are exclusive.
both have specific charms.

i'm a little afraid of the death of the tungsten bulb.

i have been asked by our friend mr. obvious to write for the international hits blog, so i thought my contribution would be some tiny thoughts on music. it's all i think about really, and i need a release. i'll start with something short...(and it's not a poem).

OFFICIAL ASS-KICKING ROCK ALERT

Night of the Wolf :: Deathhunter
Brad Merrill, an old friend of mine once confided in me that according to his Uncle Raymond Jenkins, the secret to a successful life was to, "Find a thing you love to do, and then do it as if it could save you from werewolves." Mr. Jenkins, himself a werewolf and coincidentally, not a very successful one was hit by a bus one night while chasing a group of young republicans out of the First Baptist Church in Tampa, FLA.

Merrill, a former Atlantan and the once driving force behind the popular 1990's Atlanta band The Merrills, took some time off from Rock to get down to the business of modern life and adult education. Now hailing from Chattanooga, TN, Merrill drives his newest project with, what appears to be a renewed belief that he can beat the fate that befell his dear Uncle Raymond. Night of the Wolf is a blistering metal onslaught, ala; Mastodon, Iron Maiden, Megadeth.Listen to and download the most righteous sounds of "Deathhunter" at their Night of the Wolf mySpace page

Dan Fogelberg Dies

Ok kids, I know you probably don't know or care who Dan Fogelberg is. Why should you anyway? He was unlikely to ever play at the earl. Rick Rubin wasn't gonna rescue his career at some point with a ground breaking comeback record. He would have never joined the cast of a lame celebreality series on vh1. Dan Fogelberg was a singer/songwriter who helped define that "Soft Rock" from the late seventies that came from the FM radio lodged in your mom's '79 ford station wagon.
I remember two hits he had. "Same Old Lang Syne" and "Leader of the Band". He had a soft, sensitive, nostalgic flair with his lyrics and a gentle touch with production.
But yes, why should you care?
Well, Fogelberg died of Prostate Cancer at the age of 53. Folks, that is young. When a disease that can be beaten by early detection takes the life of a musician, I always get a little worried for all my own musician friends with no health insurance, or worse - the kind with a deductable so high, a preventative colonoscopy or other such routine examination would cost more than the car many of them can't even afford. Almost losing a close friend to a similar Cancer this past year, and realizing that I can't afford my own colonoscopy - I have to stop and think just for a second how quickly things like this can change your life forever, and how fleeting that period of time is in life where you really believe you're invincible and that things like this can never happen to you your drummer or bass player. Kids, take care of yourself - appreciate one another - consider a day job at turner.
This December 24th, take a listen to "Same Old Lang Syne" and while you experience the romantic, kinda sad tale of running into your old girlfriend at the grocery store on a lonely, snowy christmas eve - remember how short, fragmented and chaotic life really is and say a little prayer for your insides, which could already be lousy with cancer for all you know since your life choices and passion have led you away from the 6 or 8 jobs you can get in America that make it possible to keep yourself healthy.
And if you have one of those jobs - resolve this new years to take advantage of that luxury, for it is a rare thing.
Rest in Peace Dan Fogelberg. There but for the grace of dog go I.

Noot D'Noot; the party and the proper way to get it underway

Noot D'Noot Live Dec. 14 2007 at The Eyedrum Gallery in Atlanta, GA

I was laying in my bed napping after a long day of work, strenuous work-out and shower, enjoying the two hours or so I had before the clock started entering into traditional, "rock time". When all of a sudden, I was awakened from the slumber of low blood sugar by that smiling Irish Bastard of a partner of mine calling my cell phone. "Noot starts in 15 minutes..."
What the fuck?
Off I went. No glasses, no camera, no dinner. I locked the dog in the house and hit the road. I gotta say, Man am I glad I got out of bed and went to see Noot D'Noot. They were fantastic. Two songs in and the room was warm. The dancers carved a half-moon up front and began to take turns cutting. Tommy Chung, from the Selmanaires joined the band for "Fire King"
off the upcoming "Goofer Dust redux '08" CD from I-Hits this Spring. The last song featured a bit of a burlesque moment, by what can only be described as one of Atlanta's lovliest females. She brought down the house with an old style tease-arino!
It was one Fun, Funky, Fantastic 50-minutes of Delight. Best Hour of my Week. Thanks Noot!

The Scientific Superstar

I met this guy, Paul Gallant at the AmigaCon in Tulsa back in '93. We really hit it off talking about the shape of Counselor Troy's uniform and playing Smash TV in the hotel Bar.

We have since been in constant communication via a system of blind, albino homing pigeons, carrying tiny packets of damp coffee grounds, within which the secret codes are concealed. He also sends me email. He is the Scientific Superstar.

His new CD is ready - I have heard it. It is broadcasting at maximum wattage from way, way, way, out in left field. I guess I would describe it as the complete opposite of whatever kind of music is on your radio right now...no matter what. Absolutely Unique. A rare treasure.

It was recorded in, what can only be described as lo-fi from another era warmth. The kind of music that sounds like it is coming out of a flying saucer, into an old philco, family sized tube radio and burnt straight to cd. It's interesting because it literally sounds better the louder you turn it up. Instruments begin to pop out and the sound separates a bit at a higher volume, so that it's not so much 'louder' as it is 'clearer' - totally awesome.

Paul and his brother, the venerable NC graphic arts legend, Daniel Gallant operate a loose conceptual collective called 'The Scientific Superstar'. The Story, based on the suburban surrealism of teenage life in North Raleigh in the 80's and the soundtrack, itself a stand-alone sonic force are contributed by Paul while the entire, full-sized comic is drawn by Danny. His style and sensibilities, like his brother come from their own unique place, though commonplace for me, after so many years of admiration and familiarity. If you like graphic fiction, strange new music and maybe even a few laughs to boot, check out the Scientific Superstar from Durham NC.

At the behest of all concerned parties

Pertaining to the blogs we am going to write from time to time and from place to place.
Pertaining to the music we am going to here in the cities and countries from area to area
Pertaining to the music business that will eat itselft from bottom to slightly lower bottom.
I have a letter from Quincy Jones' tailor assuring me safe passage through
neverland to rescue the remains of "fudgie" the "secret ape".
RIP Evel Knievel
